Feeding and Reproductive Phenotypic Traits of the Sea Urchin Tripneustes gratilla in Seagrass Beds Impacted by Eutrophication

چکیده

The sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla is a major grazer and is, hence, an excellent key model organism to study gain better understanding of responses changes in its habitat. We investigated whether there are significant variations the feeding reproductive phenotypic traits populations from three seagrass bed sites, with respect their proximity fish farms Bolinao, northwestern Philippines. established stations each sites: far, intermediate, those near farms, compared urchins’ determined these were related productivity water parameters. Regardless sampling period, adult urchins (66.92 ± 0.27 mm test diameter, TD, n = 157) areas intermediate had significantly lower indices Aristotle’s lantern, gut contents, gonads, gonad quality (high percentage unusual black gonads), far stations. Multivariate analysis showed that smaller structures gut, consumption rates positively shoot density, leaf production species diversity, as well movement larger size lantern was not food limitations. More importantly, variability gonads same provides new evidence regarding sensitivity this environmental factors may affect quality.

Effect of sperm cell density on measured toxicity from the sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla fertilization bioassay.

The sea urchin sperm fertilization bioassay is an approved U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) biomonitoring tool for regulatory and compliance purposes. The method adapted for the Hawaiian species Tripneustes gratilla recommends a sperm-to-egg ratio of 2,500. Using a fixed ratio for all tests does not sufficiently account for seasonal and individual variabilities of this organism. ...

Nocardioides echinoideorum sp. nov., isolated from sea urchins (Tripneustes gratilla).

A Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile, rod-shaped, yellow-pigment-producing bacterium, (designated strain CC-CZW004T), was isolated from seafood samples (sea urchins) at Penghu Island in Taiwan. Strain CC-CZW004T grew optimally at pH 7.0 and 30 °C in the presence of 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA genes revealed a distinct taxonomic position attained by strain CC-CZ...

Impact of Ocean Warming and Ocean Acidification on Larval Development and Calcification in the Sea Urchin Tripneustes gratilla

BACKGROUND As the oceans simultaneously warm, acidify and increase in P(CO2), prospects for marine biota are of concern. Calcifying species may find it difficult to produce their skeleton because ocean acidification decreases calcium carbonate saturation and accompanying hypercapnia suppresses metabolism. However, this may be buffered by enhanced growth and metabolism due to warming. METHODOL...

Best Dressed Test: A Study of the Covering Behavior of the Collector Urchin Tripneustes gratilla

Many sea urchin genera exhibit cryptic covering behaviors. One such behavior has been documented in the sea urchin Tripneustes gratilla, and previous studies have theorized that this behavior serves as protection from UV radiation. However, other hypotheses have been presented such as protection from predators or added weight to help T. gratilla resist strong currents. A field study was conduct...

Sea urchin feeding fronts

Sea urchin feeding fronts are a striking example of spatial pattern formation in an ecological system. If it is assumed that urchins are asocial, and that they move randomly, then the formation of these dense fronts is an apparent paradox. The key lies in observations that urchins move further in areas where their algal food is less plentiful. This naturally leads to the accumulation of urchins...
